MUSIC After eight years of success, the girls of popular Finnish pop/rock band Tiktak have
decided to quit and each go their own ways.
According to a press release issued by record company Universal Music, the reason for the
split has nothing to do with arguments, personal differences, or anything of the kind.
"We have lived this band for years already, and now it feels like it's time to move on in
life," according to the members of the chart-topping girl band .
The six girls from Helsinki signed their first record deal in 1999 at the young age of 13
and have released seven albums and 22 singles. Their biggest hits include Lopeta (1999),
Sekoitat Mun Maaelman (1999), Kyyneleet (2001), Hairitsen Sinua (2001), Jaa (2002) and
Sankaritar (2005).
In 2000 and 2001, the band also had reasonable success elsewhere in Europe and performed
in Asia and the United States with English language material under the name Tik N' Tak.
On November 7th, Tiktak will release one more (double)album, "Sinkut 99-07", containing
all their singles, b-sides as well as rare and new material. The first single from the
album, Miten onni korjataan, will be made available for airplay on Monday (September 17,07).
Petra, Tuuli, Mimmu, Noora, Nea and Emppu will also go on a farewell tour spanning major
Finnish cities in November and December.

Whether they were slinging bouncy, Hanson-esque teen pop or synth-driven indie rock,
Tiktak managed to hold their own as a staple of Finnish Top 40 radio in the early 2000s.
Comprised of six girls from a music school in Helsinki (Petra, Mimmu, Emppu, Noora, Nea,
and Tuuli), the bandmembers were barely in their teens by the time they landed a major
record deal with Universal in 1999. Their debut album, Frendit, was released in Finland
soon after, and the band attempted to break into the U.S. market the following year.
Billing themselves at Tik N' Tak, the group released two English-language singles,
"Don't Look Back" and "Upside Down," and re-released their debut under the title Friends.
In spite of earning rave reviews from various indie critics, the album flopped on
the U.S. market and Tiktak returned to Finland in 2001. The band returned to writing
songs in Finnish on their second album, Jotain Muuta (Something Else). Three more albums
followed over the next four years, including 2005's Myrskyn Edella, which was nominated

Tik N' Tak is a band that would not exist without friendship. The story began when six little
girls met in the 3rd grade with one common interest: MUSIC. Friendship and music have been
the driving force for Tik N' Tak for nearly four years now. All of the girls study at the
North Helsinki Band School, where Noora, Emilia and Petra have also studied acting.
The groups exceptional talents were obvious from the start and the Director of the school
started to concentrate on training them as a band as well as individual musicians. After
years of hard work they were introduced to Hannu Sormunen (A & R Manager for Universal
Music Finland) and before long the record deal was struck.
This didn't mean that Tik N' Tak had it made, it meant more and more of hard work.
Work in this case though meant the same for the girls as FUN! The next stage was to start
preparing for their first studio session and so after a few weeks of training they went
to record their first single, "Upside Down".
The video for "Upside Down" was a huge success, and was shown on all of the important TV
shows in Finland. Making their first video was a day that the girls will never forget
and also the hottest! The girls spent the whole day dancing, singing and enjoying the
hot summer sun on a rooftop in the centre of Helsinki. At the end of the day there were
six tired but extremely happy girls. The next day of shooting was at the studio where
most of the dance parts where filmed, and as everyone knows the result was excellent!
"Upside Down" was released commercially in Finland in August, 1999 and it went straight to
Top 10 in the Official Finnish Singles Chad, peaking at #2. The single was a perfect
launch pad for Tik N' Taks career in their home country. It presented a new kind of
a girl band to the audience, who immediately fell in love with Tik N’ Tak’s individuality,
fresh image and the fact that the girls really played their instruments by themselves.
Even before signing their record deal, Tik N' Tak had been doing a lot of gigs. The real
test came in August when they performed their hit single, "Upside Down" live to 50,000
people at an annual benefit concert at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Tik N' Taks
second single, "Don't Turn Back", was first performed in an annual song contest
"Jyrki Hit Challenge" in October, 1999. The girls' energetic television performance
with Don't Turn Back made a huge impact on the jury and the audience and it was voted
the winner of the contest. Afterwards the band celebrated their victory with
non-alcoholic drinks together with their families and friends. Don't Turn Back
was serviced to radios two days after their victory at the song contest and it was
playlisted immediately by the biggest radio stations in Helsinki. Don't Turn Back
climbed to #2 on the Finnish Music Control Chart, which is the highest position
ever achieved by any Finnish artist. It also went straight to Top 10 on The Official
Finnish Singles Chart, peaking at #3. (FYI: Jyrki is the most important daily music
show in Finland and is affiliated with Much Music - Canada)
The Finnish version of their debut album "Friends" was released in Finland on 22nd
of November, 1999 and went straight to the Top Ten on the Official Finnish Album Chart,
peaking at #2 (Less than 200 copies away from the #1 chart position on the last
album chart of 1999!).
This band went from signing their first record deal to receiving their first gold
record in just 6 months! Their first two singles, Upside Down and Don't Turn Back
captured the Finnish medias attention in a big way and turned these girls'
world upside down. This has been a very busy and exciting time for Tik N' Tak,
and a huge achievement when you consider that the girls' other commitment,
School, is also a main part of their lives - fortunately for them, they are
as talented here as they are on the music side.
A genuine love of music combined with their musical skills, hard work and friendship
made Tik N' Tak a phenomenon in their home country. Emilia, Mimmu, Nea, Noora, Petra,
and Tuuli received their first platinum record on the 17th of January, 2000 after
their sensational gig at the Gloria Theatre, Helsinki. Tik N Tak is the youngest
band ever to receive gold and platinum awards in Finland.
Tik N’ Tak’s debut album "Friends" is a prefect combination of outstanding pop tunes,
beautiful vocal harmonies and a rockin' band sound. The songs on the album have been
written by top songwriters from Finland, Sweden, Norway, UK and USA. All songs are
originals and Tik N Tak had an important role in choosing the right tunes for the
album. From the very beginning the girls were involved in the creative process.
They turned down five versions of the lyrics for their debut single, before the
final version was done. Tik N’ Tak had ideas for the whole album and the songwriters
worked with the band several months before the right ingredients were mixed together
for what has now proved to be a brilliant pop album.
The first Tik N Tak single Upside Down was released in all European territories during
the summer of 2000. The girls had a very busy and exciting summer of international
promotion, which covered Germany, Spain, UK and Poland among others. Tik N Tak is
looking forward to working in other countries around the world as well, but they
are also preparing to start their last school year before college.
Last October Tik N Tak did a tour in the USA with Radio Disney. The girls performed
in Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Hartford. All the girls
were really excited as this was their first time to visit USA. On their free time
they visited amusement parks, Universal Studio and not forgetting their favourite sport...
shopping.
On February 7th, 2001 Tik N'Tak started their first long tour in the USA, supporting
Aaron Carter for four weeks. The band performed 22 shows in 18 different cities along
the east coast. Tik N Tak also recorded two new tracks for the US version of the album,
one is a beautiful ballad called "Why Girls Cry" and other is a cool up-tempo song called
"What's Up". At the moment the band is concentrating on finishing their last school
year before college and of course promoting their fourthcoming album in the USA.
There have also been some rumours of a US summer tour...
Don't Turn Back is the new international hit single from Tik N Tak. The song was written
by the same guys, who wrote the superb debut single and it is even stronger than Upside Down.
Don't Turn Back rocks harder than it's predecessor and has one of those 'larger than life'
hooks! Tik N Tak filmed a video for the new single in July with the Finnish director
Mikko Lehtinen, who had a perfect vision of what the band is all about. The video
captures Tik N' Taks bubbling energy and the individuality of each of the six girls.
The band also took part in planning of the video and their favourite scene can be
seen at the end of the video where the whole group is covered with foam! Tik N Tak
has said that making videos is the best fun that they can think of and it can absolutely
be seen on this one!
